Hours: 8:30am - 3:30pm

Teaching Personnel is seeking enthusiastic and supportive individuals to work as Student Engagement Mentor within secondary schools across Newport from September. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable school-based experience while helping students overcome barriers to learning and build confidence within education.

Whether you're considering a future career in teaching, psychology, youth work, pastoral care, or SEN support, this role provides hands-on experience supporting students during a crucial stage of their education journey.

About the Role

As a Student Engagement Mentor, you will support pupils who may require additional encouragement, emotional support, or help maintaining engagement throughout the school day.

You'll work closely with students who may experience:

  • Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
  • Social, emotional, or behavioural challenges
  • Low confidence or difficulties engaging in lessons
  • Barriers affecting attendance, routines, or learning

Your role will focus on building positive relationships and helping students feel supported, motivated, and ready to succeed.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and classroom engagement
  • Assisting students with emotional regulation and confidence building
  • Providing support during lessons, interventions, and school activities
  • Acting as a positive role model within the school environment

You may have experience in:

  • Sports coaching or team leadership
  • Youth work or mentoring

  • Tutoring or education support

  • Mental health or wellbeing support

Most importantly, we're looking for individuals who are approachable, resilient, proactive, and passionate about helping young people succeed.

✅ Requirements

To work through Teaching Personnel, candidates will need:

  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
  • EWC registration
  • To be aged 18 or over
  • Completion of a Level 2 Safeguarding Course during onboarding
  • Two professional references covering the last 24 months
