Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Learning Mentor for secondary schools across Sunderland, with positions available immediately. This is a broad, student-focused role that sits between academic support and pastoral care — working with young people who are underachieving, lacking confidence, or struggling to reach their potential, and helping them to set goals, develop resilience, and engage more positively with their education.

Unlike a Behaviour Mentor, the focus here is less on managing conduct and more on unlocking potential. You'll be working with students who have the ability to succeed but need someone in their corner — someone consistent, encouraging, and equipped to help them navigate the barriers that are holding them back.

What the role involves:

• Delivering regular 1:1 and small group mentoring sessions focused on academic progress and personal development
• Setting achievable targets with students and supporting them to work toward them
• Building trusted, motivating relationships with underachieving or disengaged students
• Liaising with subject teachers, heads of year, and the SENCO to ensure a coordinated approach
• Monitoring student progress and contributing to reviews and reports
• Supporting students through transitions, exam periods, and other challenging points in the school year
• Upholding safeguarding responsibilities at all times

What we're looking for:

• Experience in a mentoring, learning support, youth work, or educational role
• A motivating, patient, and solution-focused approach
• Ability to build genuine rapport with young people who have lost confidence in their own ability
• Strong communication skills across students, staff, and families
• Relevant qualifications in education, youth work, or coaching are desirable
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service
